The No Excuses Mentoring Program is a volunteer effort coordinated by Fellowship Bible Church in Partnership with Dunbar Magnet Middle School and Little Rock Central High, under the LRSD Volunteers in Public Schools. This program began seven and a half years ago at Dunbar when one volunteer recognized the immense need for one-to-one support for students demonstrating potential, but lacking the supportive resources necessary to achieve that potential. After receiving administrative approval and parental permission, one of our Coordinators began meeting with one 6th grade young man for an hour a week to focus on academic strengthening, organizational skills, building a relationship and character. She worked alongside a mother trying her best and acted as an advocate and hope-bringer for that young man and his family for the next seven years. Last June, that young man was the first high school graduate of the No Excuses Mentoring Program.
What began as one woman and one student meeting one hour a week has now grown into 50 students meeting with 50 men and women each week. The program is completely volunteer-led and supported, operating only on donations of time and resources. The essential framework of the program is below:
1 ADULT - 1 STUDENT - 1 HOUR/WEEK - 1 SCHOOL YEAR
Teachers, administrators and mentoring coordinators select 6th grade students each September who they think would most profit from the support, accountability and encouragement of a caring adult who would meet with them for one hour a week. Mentors assist students with organizational skills and provided academic assignments in the areas of reading and math. As they build valuable relationships with the students, they also help develop character foundations for a lifetime. Mentors who continue with their students may do so through graduation from high school.
Mentors are trained in a two-hour training program provided by coordinators from Fellowship Bible Church. Mentors and their students also participate in two large group outings during the school year - a Fresh Start Field Trip in January and an end-of-the-year banquet in May. The limited investment made by the mentors can dramatically impact the lives of these young people forever! And if you mentor, you will never be the same!
